Uses of Templates

The Convergence template editor has a menu 'Use Template For:' that determines what type of documents a template is intended to generate. Each type of template has a default data table type used for reading template data tags. For most template categories, the default data table is cases, unless noted otherwise below.

The template categories below are also used by the template editor when picking a template.

Letters and Reports

Letter and report templates all show up in the same general use menus for generating new documents. Letters and the different report types all differ only in their default tables, and their category when picking out a template to view or edit.

Invoices

If a template is designated for invoices, its name will show up in the 'Print:' menu of the invoice editor. The default table will be invoices.

Macros

Macros are templates within templates that can be used across different templates. Common recurring sections like letterhead, CC addresses, or referrer address are uses of macros, as are helper macros, such as one to insert 'his' or 'her' according to the case data. Macros show up in a menu in the Data Tag Palette, and can be typed in directly as macro tags in the template editor. See Macros in the Template Markup chapter for more details.

Envelope

If a template is an envelope template, it will be used by the Envelope Printer to generate a printable envelope using data from your case.

Interface Elements

Interface templates may only be modified by the admin user, and make up parts of the convergence interface. The template 'Case Info Header' generates the informational header with current case info that appears at the top of most pages. The template 'Case List Extra' generated the extra popout you see when the '+' button is clicked in a case list. The interface template 'Contact Info' fills in the Contact Info popup you get if you click on the letter 'i' button for a contact type in the popup menu. The template 'Note Details' generated the extra case note info that appears when you click the '+' button in a case note list.

There will be more template generated interface segments as Convergence is updated. These will assure Convergence remains flexible as different business models and custom data sets are applied to it, and that you may include your custom data fields in informational displays in more places.
